Beasain – Aralar – Ataun – Olaberria – Beasain

Starting in Beasain, you will get through Aralar’s Natural Park, crossing Lazkaomendi and Enirio.
The ascent is long and hard, especially the final stage, close to Igaratza. Once there, it starts a pleasant downhill to Lareo reservoir. Get down the road to Ataun, where you will have to go up a short but steep slope, into the town of Olaberria. From here you will be getting closer to Beasain, seeing the beautiful caseríos of the area, and going down passing Indar’s factory and Igartza Monument Complex.

Ordizia – Lazkaomendi – Lareo – Ataun – Ordizia

This route starts in the center of Ordizia, ending in the same place.
From Ordizia, climb to Lazkaomendi from Lazkao’s path. Once in Lazkaomendi, from the old school spot, you will get fantastic views of Aralar and Aizkorri-Aratz mountain range. From the old school, turn right and you will find a path full of farmhouses. Then, this will turn into a track and you will see four fountains, being the fourth one Intxusti’s fountain. From Intxusti’s fountain, you will be getting in Aralar, where the higher altitudes take place. These kilometres are the highest of the whole hike, since once you get to Errekabeltz, you will get right away to Lareo reservoir. Here you will find many big stones, so lift up your bike! Lareo reservoir supplies water to Ataun, which is the next town the track takes you to, for 5 km. At the end of the track, go down the road to Ataun’s neighbourhood of Aia and keep going down untili the beginning of Lizarrusti’s port. The last kilometres, by road, will take you to two Ataun’s neighbourhoods, San Gregorio and San Martín, and the town of Lazkao.
To finish the route, you’re coming back to Ordizia!

Lizarrusti

This new climbing school has the ease of being able to leave the car nearby in a car park. It has a beautiful and short approach path, comfortable foot of the track and good rock quality. You can still equip a lot in the area.

Leaving the car in the parking of the Interpretation Center of Lizarrusti, in 15 minutes you reach by foot the foot of the track, walking the trail. In this school you can climb in a good temperature during the hot summer days.

Jentilbaratza

This school is located in the village of Ataun. It is located in an unbeatable location and shows of them the remains of an old tower found on its top. According to history, soldiers controlled the arrivals of Navarre soldiers from here. He also tells the legend that in this area the bodies of the Gentilak, a Basque mythological character, were buried.

The history of this school begins in the 1980s when a group of young people from the Goierri starts to equip pathways from below. In the 1990s, another crew with a more sporty perspective started equipping pathways from above. That’s when you equip the best roads. Today, we can find a low-grade school.

Intzartzu

On this magnificent wall, you can find only one way. The way up the wall is an artificial way. Her opener, Mikel Saez de Urabain, opened her solo in 1998. The quality of the rock is generally good. We’ll find lots of holes and fine cracks. Birds take advantage of these holes to make their nests. The presence of vultures, crows and similar species is abundant in the area and it is therefore appropriate to respect the area from December to August. It would be interesting to reserve the climbing area in Alpine style because nearby there are sports climbing areas.

Haitzartea

This small climbing school is located in the village of Zaldibia and is in a privileged setting. As a climbing school, it’s a good place to spend half a day. It’s south-facing. In order to arrive we will take from Zaldibia the road that leads to the merchant of Olakosail (Akapulko); from now on, we will reach the tanks and the road for vehicles ends at this point. Following the path that leads to the dam and following the water channel, we will arrive in 10 minutes to Haitzartea.

We can find 2 sectors which are very different in the type of climbing. Doing a little bit of history, we can find ancient climbing material in the area like nails, cordines and so on. The first impulse to equip it for sport was from Erramun, who opened 3 tracks in the area above. These pathways have required renewal in order to be scaled. Later, Iñigo Zeberio equipped 4 tracks on the wall below and one on the wall above. Iñigo proposes in seventh grade on a track in this area. There is the possibility of equipping more in that area.

Artzateaitza

This small climbing school in Ataun is more recent than Jentilbaratza or Intzartzu, which are next door. Since he was born, he was born with the concept of sports climbing. We can find 2 different sectors. The freiest and most difficult is the Korta sector in which the aesthetic of the wall is the most remarkable, with its perfect gray limestone. It is a pity that the equipment had to carve a lot of dams in order to equip them. The foot of the road is usually dirty having gained sheep in the area.

The second sector is that of the forest and the Erlaitz sector that is there. Here the difficulty of the roads is more variable: we can find pathways between 6b and 7b. The scenery and tranquility offered by the area for the practice of climbing is a wonder. You have to go through a hamlet to access the area where the dogs will get you barking.

Goierri mining park: Mutiloa, Ormaiztegi and Zerain

Goierri mining park

Mutiloa, Ormaiztegi y Zerain

Welcome to Goierri´s mining park and the Greenway

We are in Goierri, in the Basque Highlands of Euskadi, where nature touches the sky and culture and gastronomy form a binomial with origin of denomination. The mining past of the region can be felt in the Goierri´s Mining Park, where we will be able to move to times when mineral extraction was the way of life of many goierritarras (people from the region).

Download map

We present Goierri´s Mining Park, formed by various elements, all related to the strong mining industry that, from remote times, has remained until the beginning of the twentieth century. As the main element we have the Green Way between Mutiloa and Ormaiztegi, which runs through the old mining railway used to transport the mineral extracted in the area’s minefields and transport it to Ormaiztegi, from where it was carried by rail to the nearby sea ports. In addition to the Via Verde we have 3 tracks to access and link with the old mining cores.
Now you will be able to enjoy the entire Goierri Mining Park from OrmaiztegiMutiloa or Zerain, walk the path through which the mineral was transported by air cable and be able to know the different resources of the area, such as the Zumalakarrangi Museum and the Ormaiztegi railway bridge, the ovens of Aizpitta, the ethnographic area, the hydraulic sawmill in Zerain, and the Barnaola area in the village of Mutiloa, as well as the town itself and the district of Liernia.
AIR CABLE WAY From the Aizpea ovens, the ore was carried by an air cable to Barnaola and from here it was transported by train to Ormaiztegi. We cannot go through the air, and that is why this new road has been created, which links Aizpea with Barnaola mines and allows us to go all the way that the mineral made.
TROI WAY The Troi route is the route to access to Mutiloa mining area. We started this route in the village of Mutiloa, and after a section on the road, near Troi river, to reach Barnaola. The structures of two decantation dikes and the storage and transport of Mutiloa minebox are lifted next to the same name. From here the mining railway linking with Ormaiztegi, now converted in a Grren Way, started. The road follows the signs of GR283.

From the village of Zerain a local path to access the Aizpitta furnaces from where we can make all the new journey to Ormaiztegi. This local path is also a circular route.

Mutiloa-Ormaiztegi green way

The Mutiloa-Ormaiztegi Green Way was a mining route of origin. It is attached to the mountainous slopes, above the urban areas to which it refers. Its beauty lies in the panoramic valleys at its feet and the forest mass surrounding it. There is an orientation game suitable for families and children. The map is collected at the tourist office of Ormaiztegi.

History of mining areas

In Mutiloa the iron ore, extracted in Caminza, Ollargain, Gezurmuño or Aizpuru was, since medieval times, the main supplier of the active ferrerías of the upper basins of the valleys of the Urola and Oria River. At the end of the 19th century The Mining Company of Mutiloa S.A imposed a more organized and systematic exploitation. To achieve this, it built up the necessary infrastructure to meet the requirements of the new production system: the mining railway that travelled the border from the vicinity of the Barnaola dwelling to the Ormaiztegi station, the inclined planes, the mineral washers and the decantation rafts… that together with the school, the canteens and the office occupied and substantially altered the slopes of the Ergoena neighborhood.
The iron ore fed the great English and French foundries such as Les Forges del Adour de Boucou in Baiona. In 1927 they shipped the last mineral load. During the Second World War a German company took a specific interest in this area and in the 1950s the company of Legazpi Patricio Echeverria S.A extracted the iron ore sufficient to supply the newly built sponge ovens. In the 1970s, the Canadian company Exminesa discovered the Trojan Mine’s rich lead filon which was active until 1993.
It was the last episode of a mining tradition rooted for centuries in both Mutiloa and the Basque Country. Also in Zerain a mining operation has been unequivocal since the Middle Ages. The most intense activity began in the middle of the 19th century and at the end of the 19th century foreign capital companies, English, Dutch, German companies reorganized the coto and began to work in a systematic way with the installation of new technological elements: internal mining railways, calcination furnaces, air cables…
This mineral was highly demanded by European steel companies. Market fluctuations and international war mainly meant that extractive activity was not continued. The last work of the cutoff took place in the 1950s when the company Patricio Echeverria S.A. from Legazpi was interested in iron films in view of the cyclical shortage of scrap which fed the furnaces of his steel industry. This activity has left us an interesting landscape and cultural heritage where the calcination workshop with its three impressive furnaces that receive us next to the Interpretation Centre of Aizpitta stands out.

Sara Trail SL-Gi 2007

This tour is closely linked to the figure of Jose Miguel Barandiaran and starts near the Barandiaran Museum, located in San Gregorio neighborhood.
His birth house named Peruenezar, Sara etxea, the home where she lived for a long time until her death, and the Larruntza mill, venue of the Barandiaran museum, meet on this tour where he himself used to walk. Every day I went up to the Gaztiñerre reservoir, which is the highest point on this path.
Neighborhood roads of yesteryear, farmhouses, forests and meadows, river banks, San Martín, etc. They are some of the resources that can be enjoyed on this easy, calm and wonderful trail.

Lizarrusti-Lareo SL-Gi 2005

To begin the tour we will go to Aralar Nature Park Interpretation Centre in Lizarrusti (Ataun).

The “Parketxe Lizarrusti” is the Aralar Nature Park Interpretation Centre. In this centre, you can receive information about resources of the Natural Park. In addition to the information point, they have a hut, restaurant and bar. Located 620 meters above sea level, this is the largest beech forest in Gipuzkoa. Starting from this beautiful place, you will be able to know the secret places and summits that the Aralar Natural Park offers.

Lizarrusti-Lareo route includes the route between the “Parketxe Lizarrusti” and Lareo swamp. The “Parketxe Lizarrusti”  is located in the port of Lizarrusti, border between Gipuzkoa and Navarra. The parketxe is witness to the border, and said building was once, the headquarters of the Mikeletes.

The tour is very comfortable. Of course, being a mountain route, it has small slopes but it has not any difficulty.

The tour begins in a leafy beech, and continues along the track that becomes a path until you reach the waterfalls of the Maizi River. The land that was previously beech, becomes a land with a huge diversity of flora: oak, ash, linden, hawthorn, etc. You can see a beautiful landscape towards Berreno. We will continue the ascent towards the swamp, leaving behind the tunnel carved in the rock of Akerreta and the Maizi river, passing first through the quarry from which the construction material was extracted and through the retaining wall of the swamp later.

Thus we will arrive at the Lareo swamp. We can surround it with a hike of approximately 1 kilometer. It is a place among the mountains that will surely make you fall in love forever.
