PERIBIDEA: A ROUTE CONNECTING TWO WORLDS

This route connects Gaintza, nestled within the Atlantic rural landscape, to the urban centre of Ordizia. For over 500 years, our ancestors used these paths to connect these two worlds. Peribidea should not be understood as a single path, but rather as a network of paths: a network that connected the villages and farmhouses of Gaintza, Baliarrain, Altzaga and Arama with one another and with the industrial and commercial centres of the Goierri region.

Peribidea, therefore, unites us: it connects us with our history and our legends, with our ancestors and descendants, with our land and our roots. Yet these connections do not limit us. On the contrary, they provide the foundations of our identity in the world. The people who have travelled these paths and the landscapes surrounding them have changed over the centuries. We are not the same as we once were, but we are who we are today, and we will be who we are tomorrow, thanks to what we were yesterday. Step by step, let us continue to build our existence and our future along the Peribidea.

Arama

Arama is the smallest village in the historic territory of Guipuzcoa, with a population smaller than 200 people over an extension of 1.3 km². It is located right in the centre of Goierri. Do you know its architectural heritage?

Arama reaches the slope of mount Arriguntzagaña, on the right bank of the rivers Oria and Zaldibia. Its urban area offers a privileged panoramic view, and the mountain range that surrounds the village is a perfect space to practice various activities like hiking or trekking with circuits and routes.

San Martín’s Church stands on Arama’s main square. The church is built on the site of an old hermitage that underwent several refurbishments and extensions until reaching its current aspect. It has a rectangular floor plan, with a singular nave covered by a half-barreled vault. Inside the church you will find an ancient statue of the Virgin Mary, a truly unique piece of artwork. The rectory, Caserío Iriarte and Caserío Iturrioz make up the rest of the architectural heritage.

There is a windmill, Molino de Ibares, in the valley, right under a bridge on the river Oria, where the entrance to the village used to be.
