Zegama-Aizkorri & Ehunmilak Marathon

Mountain races

Zegama-Aizkorri MARATHON & Ehunmilak

Mountain races

In Goierri there’s a natural mix between sports and nature. The region is known internationally for its competitions. The Zegama-Aizkorri marathon, qualifying for the World Cup -more than 12,000 registrations for the 225 bibs raffled-, the Ehunmillak Ultra-Trail -a 167 km two-days race that brings 500 national and international racers-; the Goierriko bi Haundiak -88 km, one day and 500 participants- and the mountain marathon Marimurumendi Maratoia, enclosed in the weekend of the two trail races.

Zegama-Aizkorri

According to experts, the Zegama-Aizkorri marathon is one of a kind, not just one of the most prestigious mountain races in the world but also unique. Mud and cold are are bread and butter of this race. Kilian Jornet won it almost as many times as Rafa Nadal won the Roland Garros: eleven times! In his own words: “Zegama is Zegama. Is just a race that I always carry in my heart.”

Zegama-Aizkorri is a very technical, highly challenging race. It is one of the most relevant trail-running races internationally and one of the 6 events in the Golden Trail World Series, the circuit with the best races around the world, where the best runners in the world meet up. It is also the main event of the 5 events that make the Golden Trail National Series.

Zegama-Aizkorri mountain marathon has been celebrated since 2002 in Aizkorri-Aratz Natural Park with departure and arrival in Zegama, where all the people become the organization of their most important event. The atmosphere in Zegama and the Natural Park during that weekend is excellent.

The route is medium mountain route, and includes four of the highest peaks of the Basque Country (Aratz – Aizkorri – Aketegi) including Mount Aitxuri (1,551 meters), the highest peak of the Basque Country!

From the city of Zegama (296 m.) you reach the top of Otzaurte (652 m.) to run a trail that crosses mountain roads of great natural beauty. It spreads between herds, areas soaked in living rock and grasslands of height.

In the ultratrail discipline, Goierri has two events that are among the most important in the Spanish race calendar. Fans have awarded Ehunmilak as the best Ultra in Spain.

Ehunmillak Ultra-trail

With departure and arrival in Beasain and a journey of 170 kilometers and 11,000 meters of positive slope. It goes through 30 municipalities of Gipuzkoan, crossing the Natural Parks of Aralar and Aizkorri-Aratz. The track is 60% trail and 33% piste. To give you an idea of the hardness of the test, the first runner does so after running for almost a whole day (22 hours) and the last about 48 hours.

Goierriko 2 Haundiak

With departure and arrival also in Beasain, the route is 90 kilometers long and 6,000 meters of positive slope (70% trail and 25% trail). Across all the Goierri region, climbs two of the most emblematic peaks in the Basque Country: Aizkorri and Txindoki. The estimated arrival of the first runner is usually 10 hours and 22 hours for the last.

Marimurumendi Maratoia

Marimurumendi Maratoia is for all type of runners: the weekend of the ultratrail is held a mountain marathon with 42,195 km. and 2,300 m. of positive slope, which runs along the paths and mountains of the area of Beasain where Mari lives, one of the characters that gives life to the mythology of the Goierri. Mythology, sport and nature come together in the mmm!

Climbing

Climbing

Edurne Pasaban, big fan of Goierri!

Sport climbing

In the village of Ataun in Goierri, there are many areas with rocks and crags that are suitable for practising sport climbing. You will find several schools with training courses. There are 250 climbing routes with varying levels of difficulty. You will find climbing schools in Jentilbaratza, Aizkorrandi, Haitzartea and Lizarrusti.
Climbing In Ataun, you have an extra feature: their dome-shaped rock, formed when a low-density rock locally breaks through the crests or penetrates along and faults the surrounding rocks. It takes place along the resulting plateau around mounts Jentilbaratza, Aizkoate, Aizkorrandi, Arastortz, Agautz, Leizadi, Asundi, Loibideko Mailoak and Ikarandieta, popularly known as Aitzarte
If you want to get a great view, go to the top of mount Arantzazumendi, located in the border between Ataun and Idiazabal. To preserve the area’s unique flora and fauna, climbing is restricted to certain months and certain places. Climbing is not allowed in Sastarri, Aizkoate, Intzartzu, Artzateaitza nor Ataun’s Dome, except in the surroundings of Aitzarte’s Climbing school.

16 trail running tracks in 35 km

Trail station

Basques have a great passion for the mountains, especially in Goierri where two of the most important races in the trail running circles take place: Zegama-Aizkorri Marathon and Ehunmilak Ultra-Trail race (together with G2H and Marimurumendi Marathon, on the same weekend). The Euskal Herria Trail Station has two main entrances: – If you go from Abaltzisketa, cross Aralar Natural Park – If you go from Zegama, cross Aizkorri-Aratz Natural Park. The mountain range in the shape of a wall separates Guipúzcoa and Álava, and is a true point of reference in mountaineering.
Its cultural heritage includes dolmens, ancestral caves, and medieval roads. -From Sakana, in Navarra, a valley located south of Aralar and from where it can be accessed. There are 5 new routes that are divided between Aralar and Urbasa-Andia. There are 16 tracks along both natural parks and the entrances from Zegama and Abaltzisketa are connected by a 35 km route. In Sakana we have 5 new routes divided between Aralar and Urbasa-Andia nature park. The station has training circuits that closely replicate the vertical distance to get to Aizkorri and Txindoki, as well as Zegama-Aizkorri Marathon’s whole journey and part of Ehunmillak’s Ultra-Trail.
Each facility has showers, changing rooms, and gym areas to warm up and to do exercises to help with training. There is also specialised staff -elite athletes included- to help you out! Although the itineraries are signposted, it is mandatory to use GPS while you perform the routes. Inclement weather makes some areas very challenging even for local runners!
