Villages
Ataun
Ataun was the home of the father of Basque culture, Joxemiel Barandiaran, who devotedly studied and researched the Archaeology and Ethnography of the Basque Country.
If you enjoy mythology, Ataun is the place to visit. The biggest part of Aralar’s Natural Park is in Ataun, so most of the entrances are in this village. Lizarrusti is one of them, and is home to the Interpretation Centre and an adventure park for families. Most of the routes to explore Aralar begin in Lizarrusti. At the Interpretation Centre starts the GR-283 circuit, also known as The Idiazabal Cheese Trail.
The neighbourhoods in Ataun grow around three churches: Saint Martin’s, Saint Gregory’s and Aia. There you will find different historic buildings, notably the Barandiaran Museum, where you will learn everything about Basque Mythology. Remember, it’s only 42 minutes away from Donostia-San Sebastián!
