>>SECTION OF THE CANAL PATH CLOSED BY A COLLAPSE<<
The route runs through a canal that collects the waters of the streams coming down from the Aizkorri mountain range, as the canal crosses the skirt of the Aizkorri mountain range. This water channel was built in 1925 for the production of electric power, mostly for the trash of Zegama but which served many dwellings that still had no light.
Today it is part of a network of routes around biodiversity with different characteristics.
The route of the canal departs from Zegama’s old train station, which begins to climb through different forests and an environment of herdsmen’s slums. Once the beginning of the canal where the first water begins to be collected, the path follows the path of the canal, so it has no slope.
You can walk in the company of the streams coming in, feeling the freshness of the place and the sound of the water when running. For the collection of water, the canal has a dam, called Iturbieta from where the water is directed by an underground tube towards Zegama, to the Electra Aizkorri power station. Electricity is still produced in this plant today.
