Aizkorri-Aratz Natural Park<\/b>\u00a0<\/span>covers an area of 19,400 hectares and houses the peaks of Altzania, Aizkorri, Urkilla, Zaraia and Aitxuri that establish the watershed between the Bay of Biscay and the Mediterranean sea. Two of the most important rivers in Gipuzkoa -Urola and Oria- have their springs here.<\/p>\n

Aralar Natural Park<\/b>\u00a0<\/span>offers an impressive layout with limestone elevations, rivers and natural springs. It presents a\u00a0<\/span>rich flora<\/b>\u00a0<\/span>and\u00a0<\/span>interesting fauna<\/b>: from the griffon or bearded vulture to the golden eagle. Horses, cows and sheep populate their fields, and it’s a very common spot to see the latxa sheep -producers of the delicious milk that turns into the famous Idiazabal cheese- grazing in the core of the massif.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

THE HIGHEST PEAK IN EUSKADI<\/div>\n

The highest mountain<\/b>\u00a0<\/span>in the Basque Country is in Goierri, inside Aizkorri\u2019s Natural Park. The recommended route has a certain level of difficulty regarding gradient and length, but it surely deserves a visit because there you will find the cave of San Adri\u00e1n and the Roman road, the fields of Urbia, Zorrotzarri\u2019s menhir…<\/div>\n

San Adri\u00e1n tunnel<\/div>\n
San Adri\u00e1n is a\u00a0<\/span>historical place<\/b>, transited by kings, traders, pilgrims of the Camino de Santiago… It has a 70 metre long tunnel inside a mountain of hard rock, located in a unique environment. For centuries, it was the main entrance from Europe to Castile. It was so breathtaking that many stories were told about it being a terrifying place. It\u2019s an ideal spot to get a panoramic view of Goierri. Enjoy a little trip to the tunnel with your kids and family! Both the tunnel and the North route to Santiago de Compostela have been declared a\u00a0<\/span><\/u>UNESCO World Heritage Site<\/u>.<\/span><\/div>\n

The GR-283 circuit, also known as\u00a0<\/span>The Idiazabal Cheese Trail<\/b>, is an initiative promoted by the Department of Innovation, Rural Development and Tourism of Gipuzkoa Provincial Government and approved by the Gipuzkoa Mountain Federation. It is a 6-step tour classed as medium difficulty, so it can be completed by anyone in good shape.<\/div>\n

Latxa sheep is our best ambassador. Thousands of them leave in Goierri\u2019s meadows, giving their milk to our shepherds to make -100% handmade-\u00a0<\/span>the extraordinary Idiazabal cheese.<\/b>\u00a0<\/span>More than 13,000\u20ac have been paid for half of this cheese at an auction\u2026! If you want to see authentic shepherds working, Goierri is the place to be. Talk to them, learn from them, see where they live and work\u2026 be a shepherd for one day! And be part of the whole process of making cheese.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
