Our region is very suitable for organising fun and educational activities for kids. The natural parks of Aizkorri-Aratz and Aralar make Goierri the best known in rural tourism and nature in the Basque Country. It is an ideal environment for kids to enjoy freedom and breathe the purest air of our mountains.
Here’s our recommendation: San Adrián’s viewpoint. This place is iconic in Guipúzcoa, as it was the connection between Europe and Castile during the Middle Ages. Old stories say the king of Spain Charles I, who would never bow his head to anyone, did so there. Though its strategic importance is not the same nowadays, San Adrián is still an valued path to mountaineers and history lovers. Both the tunnel and the North route to Santiago de Compostela have been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
- Start in Aizkorri-Aratz Natural Park, by the entrance in Zegama. Visit the Interpretation Centre and you’ll get the right maps to start your adventure. You will park the car in the Nature Park, in Aldaola-Ubier parking.
- Once you start hiking, you will cross the small channel of water and keep going up in the mountain towards Casa de los Mikeletes -an old construction used for tax collection and goods control-. In front of you, the tunnel is waiting.
- Just a bit further, you will see the royal pathway used by kings, pilgrims, soldiers, merchants, and more, for centuries. Continue to get to the cave, which is not really a cave… Cross it -take a look at the remains of old constructions inside- and you will get to the woods: once you see the beech trees, keep following the royal path and the white and green signposts.
- Keep going and you will get to San Adrián’s balcony… enjoy the view!
