Goierri

The paradise of many mountaineers has an iconic ambassador: Edurne Pasaban. What’s behind Basque Highlands? Get to know every part of the region and its mountains, including the highest peak in the Basque Country. These mountains bring some of the most outstanding trail athletes to Goierri. ZEGAMA-AIZKORRI & EHUNMILAK MARATHON

Mountain races

In Goierri there’s a natural mix between sports and nature. The region is known internationally for its competitions. The Zegama-Aizkorri marathon, qualifying for the World Cup -more than 12,000 registrations for the 225 bibs raffled-, the Ehunmillak Ultra-Trail -a 167 km two-days race that brings 500 national and international racers-; the Goierriko bi Haundiak -88 km, one day and 500 participants- and the mountain marathon Marimurumendi Maratoia, enclosed in the weekend of the two trail races.

Trail station

A Trail Station is a place with approved circuits to train along mountain tracks and pathways, with facilities and special signposting. Euskal Herria Trail Station is open for either those who start in the discipline and those who already have the skills but want to keep training and getting better as well as organising training sessions. So just imagine: here you have everything you need to just focus on running!

EDURNE PASABAN, BIG FAN OF GOIERRI!

Climbing

“To me, the Basque Highlands are an amazing scenario for hiking and climbing”. What’s so special about our mountains? The first woman to complete the ascent of the 14 eight-thousanders on Earth, Edurne Pasaban, declares herself a big fan of Goierri.

FROM TOWN TO TOWN

Along the bike lane!

There is a bike lane -bidegorri- connecting the towns in the valley. You can also reach the ones inside the mountains. It is incredible how people love cycling here! Some of the lanes are also suitable to practice Nordic walking. Additionally, you can walk or skate down those lanes.

If you are a bike lover, Goierri has many routes for you. Take your mountain bike and explore the Natural Parks of Aizkorri-Aratz and Aralar, through the next selection of suggested routes. Choose your preferred length and level of difficulty, and pay attention to the maps. Now you’re all set to get to know the rural side of Euskadi in a entirely different way!
